Overview

In this project, we designed a playful fun experience for people to play in physical space. We designed a new game โ€˜Tic-Dodge-Toeโ€˜ inspired from tic-tac-toe & dodge ball. We wanted to create the aesthetics of the game to display a friendly team play banter. No so competitive but very entertaining.

Game Mechanics Brief

Two teams (red & blue) of five players each.

  1. Big grid size and outside border rectangle.

  2. In every turn sand bag is thrown & it can do any or all of following tasks,

    • Hit the sand bag to opposite team member. ( IF the bag hits them they get out of the tic-tac-toe box. IF they catch it then they are not out of the game & turn goes waste. IF they dodge it, they are safe. Eventually wherever the sandbag lands on the grid tile there the position is occupied by the respective team member. )

    • Throw the sandbag to secure the position in one of the grid tiles of the tic-tac-toe BOX for the team member.

  3. The game goes on, every turn the sandbag keeps getting passed from one player to other in the team.

  4. The team to make the line first wins.

Two main caution rules for players,

    • The player can move inside their grid tile anytime but if they step out they have to get out of the tic-tac-toe box.

    • The player from opposite team can try to catch the sandbag but in the process cannot get outside the grid tile. IF they go outside the tile they get out of the tic-tac-toe box.

Key Takeaways

We learnt to design fun experiences for people in physical space. Understood the importance of cues/markers at different interaction points to make people follow intended gameplay and avoid confusion. Learnt how to use chaos to your advantage in designing for entertaining experience.
